It works. Unfortunately, it has a range just about one inch longer than your nose.
Really, it'd be a nice skill, but the TINY range puts it squarely in the junk bin, in my opinion.

I was literally standing right beside the minions, how small can it be?!

It's "in the area".
Go to The Isle of the Nameless training grounds, and look at the circles on the ground there. The biggest one is "in the area".
Sure, it looks pretty big, but in the heat of combat, I don' think I've ever caught any enemy undead in it without going out of my way to do so.
If you were LITERALLY right beside them, then I don't know. It should've worked.
I assume you DO have a Death Magic of higher than 4? ^_^

Minions don't actually change colours. This is the sneaky thing about it. They still appear to be on the same side of their creator.
"In the area" is actually pretty big, it's the same as Deep Freeze.
- eep, Rhedd beat me to it.

Oh..
then how would I know they are mine? Or will they just fight for me when I am close by, and revert back to their master's control when I leave the area?

I don't recall if they count towards your minion count or not, but they ARE yours. If you use Blood of the Master, for example, you can see them gaining health along with your own minions.
And, once yours, they will remain yours until the Verata's Aura enchantment ends. Keep in mind that when it ends, ALL minions become masterless. This includes any minions that you had before casting Aura in the first place. It's like crack, man... give your minions a taste, and then they NEED it.
Thus, if you are on a serious minion run.... once you throw up V's Aura, you are forced to continutally renew it. Or else, let it fall and kill all the masterless minions, and then raise a new army that isn't dependent on the Aura-cocaine.
.... and there is nothing quite so fun as running into an Alliance battle, facing an opposing Minion Master, getting right up in the face of his Flesh Golem and a few horrors, and throwing up Verata's Aura. I can hear them screaming through the Internet. XD

Yes they are your minons, you can Taste of Death them and Dark Bond. You will notice after saccing you 33% you will have a minion number in your enchants/conditions bar. Its handy to get a teleport skill ready like consume corpse.
It is very amusing. in 12v12. The funny part is, even if you die almost immediately after, the masterless minions mostly kills their master anyway. ^^

I have made the case that Verata's Aura needs a nerfing. It really needs a 2-3 second cast time, or a percentage based minion-steal.
From a MM pov, there's nothing you can do to prevent or mitigate Verata's Aura....and this game is all about counters, and counter-counters.

To counter Verata's Aura use Verata's Aura....
To half-counter it use any enchant removal....

You know, I didn't know they didn't change from red to green. Interesting.
Also, it's been AGES since I've used the skill. I bet it really is nice to have versus the minion masters in 12vs12.

Yea, I know that's the 'counter' but it's a really poor option. Playing hot-potato with VA isn't really an elegant or skill based method.
A MM should have a reasonable chance to prevent it.
I wonder if Mark of Subversion or Guilt would interrupt it....

As VA isn't targetted it stands to reason that guilt would NOT work but I haven't tested this.. as guilt needs it to target an enemy. Shame or subversion also should not work, but again untested, as VA should work more like the aoe enchant removal of chillblains, no target, as proven by its ability to remove spellbreaker.

You know, there's some way of using verata's aura to get multiple flesh golems, but i have no idea how. I just saw a mm use it before.
